Red wine is the most popular and the most loved variety of wine in the world. All wine producing regions make red wine, which makes choosing a red wine all the more difficult because of the huge variety. Red wine has been an inherent part in the culture of nearly all civilized societies, and is said to be the drink of the kings. A lot has been said about the health benefits of consuming moderate amounts of red wine in recent scientific research, this includes delaying the ageing process, benefits to the skin, promoting a healthy cardiovascular system etc.

Red wine is prepared not only from red but black and purple grapes. During fermentation the skin of the grapes releases tannins which offer a magnificent red colour its distinct taste. Tannins along with other antioxidants also contribute to the many health benefits of red wine.

Red wine follows a simple process in preparation, the grapes are mashed along with their skin and seeds, this is then combined with additives for preservation and taste and left for fermentation until fully matured after which follows filtering , distillation and bottling where it is left for further ageing. Differences during this process produce a variety of colour and tastes.

Perhaps the most famous varieties of red wines are made in France, Italy and Spain. Although common, most wine makers aspire to meet the extremely high standards set by wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux in France. Chianti from Italy is another example. Wines coming from Rioja and Ribera del Duero from Spain are also among the best in the world.

Since the time of the Roman Empire, red wine has been a part of western culture. It is the most popular variety of wine and there are thousands of brands available from all around the world. Amongst all of the wine producing nations, French wines are perhaps the most revered, especially French dry reds. Dry red from Bordeaux often acts as a benchmark against which other varieties are judged.

Given the popularity and the vast variety of red wines, it may be a daunting task when selecting a red to suit an occasion. Broadly, red wines can be classified as follows based on their sugar content:

• Dry red wine with sugar content less than 4 g per liter,
• Semi-dry red wine with sugar content 4-12 g per liter,
• Red semi-sweet wine with sugar content 12-45 g per liter and,
• Red dessert wine with sugar content more than 50 g per liter.

Sweeter reds are generally enjoyed with desserts, whereas drier varieties are typically favored with savoury dishes.
