Muscadelle is a white wine grape variety which is commonly produced as a sweet wine. Its straight-forward grapey flavors and floral aromatics, led it to being named after the Muscat grape variety (of which it is NOT related). It is known famously for dual roles, one as a variety blended in white Bordeaux, and the other as a luscious component in the sweet wines of northeastern Victoria, Australia.

In its home of southwestern France, while not as heavily planted as Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, it grows prolifically, not far behind the two. Here it is blended in the sweet Barsac and Sauternes wines, and while it’s not a main varietal component, it adds palpably resonant aromatics. Whereas in Monbazillac (a bit to the east of Bordeaux) it has a more outstanding (by volume) role in the same blends.

These sweet to semi-sweet varietals are light in body, and if allowed to age, develop lovely raisin and dried fruit aromatics. Muscadelle is also blended in white Entre-deux-Mers wines, but is again overshadowed by significant volumes of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. In these varietals, Muscadelle rarely exceeds 5% of the blend.

Since the 1960’s, plantings have declined in France. Slowly falling out of favor, the variety ripens too early in the season, often producing sporadic yields, and infamously non-resistant to rot. However, Muscadelle has found a new lease on life in the vineyards of Victoria Australia, going by the name: Topaque.

Both of the Australian wines Glenrowan and Rutherglen, (two historically fortified wines) us Muscadelle in their blend to create wines of a vibrant, luscious golden color. The process of these wines begins with the grapes being left to semi-dry on the vine. Then they are partly fermented and fortified (usually with a neutral grape spirit) and barrel aged. The wine remains in the barrel until it develops rich butterscotch and caramel flavors. Wonderfully sweet, these silky wines age well for several years. Order now! For most of its history in Victoria Australia, Muscadelle was mistakenly called “Tokay.” It was misidentified as a variety blended in the Hungarian production of Tokaji. It wasn’t until the mid-1970’s that the truth came out, and its true origins and name were revealed. However the “Tokay” name stuck until 2007, when it was officially changed to Topaque (as the Australian producers didn’t want the variety confused with the sweet Hungarian wine: Tokaji).
