Montepulciano is a well-known red wine grape commonly found in central Italy. It is named after the Tuscan village, Montepulciano, which ironically, is not a producer of any famous wines. Nor is the variety grown in any of the vineyards about the village.

Montepulciano is known internationally for its minor tannins, hearty color, and soft flavors. It is best enjoyed as a young wine, accompanied with food. Though occasionally produced as its own variety, it’s usually blended with other varieties, finding the most success with Sangiovese (a close genetic relative). This primary role in blending is due to its vibrant purple color and flavor range. Adding favorable depth to (almost) 50 distinct Italian DOC and DOCG productions.

Montepulciano is Italy’s second most planted red wine variety (barely behind Sangiovese and slightly ahead of Barbera). It produces predictably high yields, and gives little fuss when processed in the winery, making it a very popular variety.

The most renowned Montepulciano based wines are found in the Abruzzo region of eastern Italy. This region produces Montepulciano in vast quantities (mostly from the flatlands and small hills about the Adriatic coast). These wines are produced under the DOC title of: Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. With the more prestigious, DOCG titled-examples springing from Abruzzo’s northern Colline Termane foothills. Order now! There are two other Montepulciano based wines of note from central Italy: Rossa Conero and Rossa Piceno. Both varieties come from the Marche region, and despite being a higher quality of wine are not as well-known as their mass-produced d'Abruzzo contemporaries. This may be a result of their names not reflecting their grape based variety. One of the drawbacks of international, varietal-centric focus.

This variety is not generally found in northern Italy as it tends to ripen late in the season. An early harvest for this variety is not at all desirable, as most of the berries would be too green. As immature grapes do not produce good wine, it found mostly in central and eastern Italy. Yet, when fully ripe Montepulciano’s deep red/purple color, moderate acid, and alcohol levels are sublime.

While multi-purpose grapes (like Muscat, Chardonnay, and the multitudes of Pinot sub-species) come springing to mind, Montepulciano has a reputation for only dry red table wines. Though it appears capable of making other wine varieties, as is seen in Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, a light, bright wine of cherry color.
