Malvasia is a Blanc wine grape variety of truly ancient origin. Historically cultivated throughout the Mediterranean, Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, and the island of Madeira, it is now found worldwide. Malvasia based wines range from white to red and the styles are equally diverse, from table, to sparkling, and sweet to fortified. Its most prodigious, “modern-day regions” are Slovenia, the United States, Greece, Croatia, Spain, Portugal, and Italy.

This variety has a very strong associations with the islands and island culture. These maritime environments provide excellent examples of Malvasia’s capacity as a wine grape/vine. The most acclaimed example, Malmsey, springs from the Portuguese island of Madeira. Malmsey is a wine variety which is heated and oxidized after vinification, having a markedly dark coloring (this can vary from region to region, as the variety can produce wines of any color) with rich, ripe, and nutty flavor notes.

Malvasia is believed to be of Greek origin and has had commercial success in the Mediterranean for over 2000 years. The name, Malvasia, is derivative of the Greek town of Monemvasia. Which was a trading hub and place of great strategic value anciently. Malvasia’s fame throughout the Middle-Ages reached such heights that Venetian merchants named their wine stores, Malyasie. The variety is grown all over Italy and is known by many names. It’s often blended with Trebbiano and is well known as an affordable mainland table wine. It’s also highly regarded as a dry wine via the DOC’s of Isonzo and Collio, having lovely flavor notes of stone-fruit with floral aromatics. In Emilia-Romagna the vogue form of Malvasia is a slightly sparkling wine with a light pink hue. While southern Italy favors the apassimento process (air drying). This process involves spreading the grapes over straw mats and allowing them to partially dry. This intensifies the natural flavors of the grape, develops phenols, and concentrates sugars (taking full advantage of Malvasia’s high sugar value) creating varieties with a higher alcohol concentration.

Douro Portugal is known for several handfuls of Malvasian sub-varieties, often used to produce a lovely white port. While Northern Spain (Navarre and Rioja) is known for blends with Viura (as Malvasia’s naturally low acid oxidizes smoothly with White Rioja, adding both body and texture).

There are many branches to the Malvasian family, Malvasia Bianca being the most prominent sub-variety (with many sub varieties springing from her as well). Additionally there are also other varieties, completely unrelated to the species, which have confusingly similar names. For example: Malvasia Corada is actually Vital, Malvasia Rei is Palomino and Malvasia da Trincheira is Folgasa.
