Malbec is one of the world’s finest dry red wines, derived from a special purple grape variety. Most of the Malbec plantations around the world can be traced back to the original Argentine Malbec grapes. Argentine winemakers are certainly responsible for the popularity of this red, today Argentina produces a staggering 75% of all Malbec internationally.

High levels of tannin and an intense violet hue on the Malbec grape makes them easy to identify, although one must not confuse Malbec grapes with the similar Malbec argente grapes. The latter, is a variety of the Abouriou grape from southwestern France.

Malbec has a full bodied flavour making it a favourite blending grape of winemakers across the world. While Malbec is relatively inexpensive in comparison with other reds, Malbec grapes are one of the six varieties used in the blending process of the famed Bordeaux, which indicates its quality. Malbec is used by some of the world’s leading producers. Different blends available include the Gamay-Malbec, the Cabernet Franc-Malbec, and of course the Bordeaux. Originally, viticulturists blended Malbec with Merlot and Tannat, creating a dark, full-bodied experience.

Malbec is perhaps most famous for its distinct smoky flavour. When exploring aromas you will find hints of tobacco, green stem, black pepper, coffee, chocolate, mocha, molasses, and cocoa. When tasting the wine, expect notes of berries and fruits including black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, plum, and pomengranate. Time spent maturing in oak barrels creates vanilla, dill, and coconut flavours. Neutral acidity makes Malbec a good choice for people seeking a wine which tastes mild to the palate. The best serving temperature for this dry red wine is at a mildly cool 69 degrees Fahrenheit.
