Producer's description

The winery Fattoria Nittardi is a winery located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region with vineyards in Chianti Classico and Maremma. Nittardi Manor, located on the border between the provinces of Siena and Florence, was originally a defensive tower, known as early as 1183 under the name "Nectar Dei" ("Nectar of God"). In the 16th century it belonged to the painter of the Renaissance Michelangelo Buonarroti, who in 1549, drawing the Sistine Chapel, wrote to his nephew Lionardo: "I would prefer two barrels of wine, not eight shirts." Somehow the artist sent Nittardi's wine to Rome as "a real gift to Pope Julius II". Today, in honor of this tradition, the first bottles of Dei's nectar, the highest grade of vineyard Maremma

In 1982, the vineyard became the property of the Frankfurt publisher and gallery owner Peter Femfert and his wife Stephanie Canali, a historian from Venice. Stephanie and Peter rebuilt Nittardi step by step with love and care. Vineyards were transplanted, and in 1992 a modern cellar appeared in the estate. A competent team of wine enthusiasts was assembled, consisting of Carlo Ferrini, an oenologist consultant; Antonio Sporio, technical director; and Giorgio Comte, Commercial Director. The son of Stephanie and Peter, Leon Femfert, since early 2013 also works at the winery. So business became family. In 2012, Maremma also became the birthplace of Nittardi's first white wine: BEN, 100% Vermentin

As a tribute to Michelangelo, a unique combination of art and wine is still cultivated today in Nittardi. Every year a well-known artist draws a label, as well as wrapping paper used for bottles of Casanuova di Nittardi Vigna Doghessa wine. The collection, which began in 1981, includes works by world-famous artists such as Hundertwasser, Corneille, AR. Penk, Mitoraja, Yoko Ono, Gunther Trass, Dario Fo and Carl Otto Goetz.
