Castle Pape Clement named to honor its most illustrious owner. Bertrand de Goth was born in 1264. At the age of 31, he became a bishop in the Pyrenees, and later, in 1299, Archbishop of Bordeaux. Then he got as a gift to the estate in Pessac. He had a great passion for viticulture and personally involved in equipment, organization and management of the area in accordance with the most modern and best practices. However, June 5, 1305 Bertrand was elected pope, and he takes his name Clement the Fifth (Clement V). Supported by Felipe IV, in 1309 papal court moved to Avignon. During this period, burdened with his duties, the Pope is forced to leave his estate and pass it to the Archbishop of Bordeaux. Continue the vineyard will be known under the name of the descendants of the Pope. Each of the archbishops continued the work of the Pope and strongly improved the vineyard. In the late 18th century, after the revolution, Archbishop of Bordeaux was deprived of his estates and vineyard became part of the public property. Several owners succeeded each other, struggling with various epidemics in the vineyard, while in 1858 it has acquired Bordeaux wine merchant Jean Baptiste Clerk. Fantastic managing the estate, he revived the glory of Chateau Pape Clement wines, the quality of which was confirmed by the Gold Medal Zhirondiyskogo Agricultural Society and the Grand Medal of the Ministry of Agriculture at the International Exhibition of 1878. Also Jean-Baptiste Clerk built a castle, later reconstructed following owner, Mr. Cinto. June 8, 1937 was the darkest day in the history of the vineyard, when heavy rain destroyed it almost completely. Two years later, Paul Montagne bought the manor and gradually revived him to life. Thanks to his efforts, the vineyard has returned to its former level and sustained surge in urbanization. His descendant Léo Montagne and Bernard Magrez continue to age-old traditions so that the wine Château Pape Clément delight wine lovers today and in the future. The total area of 32.5 hectares of vineyard, of which 60% is occupied Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon, mainly grows in gravel-sandy soil that gives the wine tannic structure ensures good aging in the bottle. More adapted to clay soils, Merlot produces a full, rich and velvety wine, which are dominated by ripe fruit. Grapes passes severe selection after harvest ridges separated by hand, raw and very gently pressed under the influence of gravity juice flows into wooden vats, where it undergoes a cold maceration. Then under the influence of gravity wine flows into new French barriques, which is aged for 18 months.
